Are you collecting other goods for babies, like formula or clothes?
Operation Baby New Year is primarily collecting diapers and wipes but will absolutely send donations like formula or clothes to the organizations we are sponsoring for this year's diaper drive.
What about cloth diapers?
We will absolutely accept cloth diaper donations at any diaper drop-off location. However, our primary need is for disposable diapers, because there are many factors that make cloth diapers difficult for many individuals in need.
First of all, most of Operation Baby New Year’s sponsored service organizations can not use cloth diapers for the families they serve. Crisis nurseries, homeless shelters, and a wide variety of direct care organizations require children to wear disposable diapers due to a lack of capacity to clean cloth diapers effectively, especially with the higher health risks involved when serving high volumes of infants and toddlers.
Second, daycare centers typically require parents to provide disposable diapers. Any parent working full time and putting their children in daycare may not be able to use cloth diapers for this reason alone.
Third, cloth diapers are also more costly to buy at original purchase and require more time for care, cleaning, and upkeep - which is a luxury many struggling families can’t afford. Many Laundromats don’t allow diapers to be washed in their machines and, even when they do, the cost of frequent washes can be more than the parent can afford.
There are many barriers and scenarios which can prevent struggling families from using cloth diapers, but that is not to say that there aren’t families out there who could benefit from access to cloth diapers. As a grassroots, community-based organization, Operation Baby New Year is about tearing down barriers which prevent access to resources while encouraging community members to take action and get involved on the issue of diaper assistance in central Minnesota.
Where are the diaper donations going?
All of the donated diapers will be going to organizations that utilize diapers in their programs, facilities, or provide direct access to individuals and families in need. Below is a current list of organizations we are sponsoring, and we are always looking for more organizations who would like us to help them collect diapers.
Do you give diapers directly to individual families?
We do not give diapers directly to families, we collect the diapers and disperse them to the organizations, agencies, programs, shelters, and food shelves who provide direct service to individuals and families listed above. If you are an individual in need of diapers now, please click on one of the links above for assistance or email us at operationbabynewyear@gmail.com and we will help connect you.
